Good news for the health conscious and frequent travellers.  Airports in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, are running tests on scanners that emit no radiation.

The BBC has reported that unlike traditional scanners which emit X-rays and “active” radiation, the T8000, developed by UK-based ThruVision Systems, uses a “passive” screening technology.

ThruVision’s scanners do not “illuminate” people with X-rays, radiation or millimeter waves. Instead, they receive terahertz waves naturally produced by objects and people. When a concealed object blocks those waves, it appears as an anomaly.

The materials that can be detected by the T8000 include weapons, explosives, liquids, gels, ceramics and narcotics.

One other upside to this new technology is that it doesn’t capture or display intimate body details which have been a concern for many travellers in the past.

Other benefits include:

Rapid screening time

No need to enter into a small confined space

Although not permanently implemented yet, these scanners have had positive results; successfully spotting contraband substances on test subjects.

Bermuda is also using ThruVision while Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines are considering implementing the new scanners.

The concept of getting from A to B

Some of the major cities in the country of Australia are quite a feat to get to and between when not taking a plane. Cairns and Darwin are both located in the northern section of the country and are two such major cities that many would like to know how to get from one to the other. It makes sense, after all, to try and hit the two when already in the northern part of the country, a far cry from Sydney and Melbourne.

Obviously, the time limited can benefit from a flight, but the other overland journeys are going to be so much more memorable.

Lucky Alice Springs? Not so sure if the locals feel that way.

ALICE Springs has been selected to be the first aircraft “boneyard” outside the US.

Functioning in the same way as  Pinal Airpark in Arizona, it will cover an area of 110ha and will house 300 planes in the Northern Territory, taking planes being decommissioned from service, that have been  stripped of all their parts like engines, electronics and wiring to be re-cycled.

It will also be a place where aircrafts as big as the A380 can be stored when they are not being used.

According to Alice Springs Airport general manager Katie Cooper the initiative is ‘ground-breaking’  for this part of the world,  but I wonder how ground breaking the locals and environmentalists think it is.

New Zealand flights look like they could be disrupted for days as ash from the Chilean volcanic eruption drifts across the country.

The Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano in Chile began erupting on June 4, with the ash plume drifting thousands of kilometres across the South Atlantic, South Africa, Indian Ocean, Tasmania and now across New Zealand.

More than 60 New Zealand flights have been cancelled and over 7000 passengers have been stranded at Airports over the weekend.

Air New Zealand will continue to fly but at lower altitudes however Jetstar and Quantas have both cancelled a number of flights as the ash cloud drifts closer.

Hertz has recently developed a quiz that helps drivers determine what kind of driver they are and therefore what vehicle they should be renting.

The “Gas” Traveler is supposedly aggressive, exciting and adventurous while the “Brake” Traveler is said to be conservative and more of a planner.

What type of driver are you?
